Sponda’s Signe development wins Finland’s Construction Site of the Year 2025 Award
The Signe site, a major office and retail property development under construction at Mannerheimintie 14 in the centre of Helsinki, has been named as the winner of Finland’s Construction Site of the Year 2025. The project, developed by Sponda, was built by main contractor Jatke Toimitilat Oy.
The annual competition, organised by Rakennuslehti, recognises the best-managed, most challenging construction sites in Finland, whose solutions serve as examples for the entire construction industry. This year, the jury focused on building services, the circular economy and the management of the use of materials.
The jury praised the Signe site in particular for its excellent cooperation and community spirit between the various parties. The construction site stood out for its organisation, cleanliness and responsible practices by all project participants. In addition, the construction site has pioneered the use of digital tools for management and cost control.
“Signe is a strategically important project for us, delivering modern and sustainably built office space to the heart of Helsinki. Already during the construction phase, we are seeing strong demand for this top-quality property, both for office and retail space. The Construction Site of the Year award is proof that we are building responsibly, in line with our values, to the highest quality”, says Sponda’s CEO Christian Hohenthal.
“We are very proud that Signe’s construction site has received recognition from industry professionals. The award shows that the project is progressing in accordance with Sponda’s high quality criteria and that the cooperation between the different actors is working exceptionally well,” says Jyri Savolainen, Sponda’s Property Development Director.
“The winning construction site has combined the best practices, systems and people,” says Antti Raunemaa, CEO of Jatke Toimitilat.
This year’s competition jury included Chairman Matti Kruus from Indepro, Heikki Heikkonen from Rakennuslehti, Jukka Hietavirta from the Regional State Administrative Agency of Southern Finland, Anssi Koskenvesa from Mittaviiva, Anu Kuoppamäki from A-Insinööri, Diana Råman from RKL and Piia Sormunen from the University of Tampere.
This year, nine construction sites participated in the competition, including Kruunusillat and the National Museum extension. The chairman of the jury, Matti Kruus from Indepro, describes the standard as very high. The buildings were evaluated on factors such as moisture management, occupational safety, quality, collaboration and production efficiency.
A significant real estate development project in the heart of Helsinki
The Signe project is a significant investment in the heart of Helsinki, and as a result, one of the city’s most central blocks will undergo a major transformation. The new building, which will be completed at the end of 2026, will enliven the cityscape and offer modern premises for companies and services. The building’s anchor tenant is the consulting and auditing company PwC, and the law firm Bird & Bird will also rent its new premises from Signe.
The high-quality office and retail property, which will be completed at the corner of Mannerheimintie and Kalevankatu at the end of 2026, combines first-class design and sustainable construction principles. The building, which meets the requirements of the EU taxonomy, aims for, among other things, LEED Platinum environmental certification, A-level energy classification and Gold-level WELL certification. The building uses 100% emission-free energy, and renewable electricity is produced by its own solar power plant.
